Research Interests

The goal of my group's research is to devise efficient algorithms for transporting multimedia traffic over IP-based networks : Internet, wireless mobile network, and local/home area networks. This includes access control, admission control, traffic measurement, congestion control, traffic scheduling, multicast routing, and router/server architecture design. The research challenge is enormous because the solutions should be scalable over a wide range of speeds, number of users, and distances. The research results are applicable to optimal design of network protocols, networked systems, and new multimedia applications.

Multimedia and Mobile Communications Laboratory (MMlab), home of my research group maintains strong research collaborations with domestic/international institutes : Korea Telecom, SK Telecom, Samsung, ETRI, LG, Posdata, IBM, Radiant, HP etc. For foreign organizations, there are Bell Labs, IBM Watson Research Center, ATR of Japan, GeorgiaTech, City University of New York, INRIA, Fraunhofer, North Carolina State University, UCSC, U of Virginia, ENST Bretagne, Keio University, NII of Japan etc. MMlab has a direct high-speed link to KOREN, Korean Internet 2, with which new multimedia applications/algorithms are tested with partners at Singapore, Japan, France and United States. MMlab is awarded the prestigious National Research Laboratory of Korea for the study of multimedia wireless Internet for five years (2000-2005). MMlab is also very active in the Future Internet research.
