  In wireless sensor networks, many communication protocols and applications rely on flooding for various networking purposes. Prior efforts focus on how to design efficient flooding algorithms; that is, they seek to achieve full reliability while reducing the number of redundant broadcasting across the network. To achieve efficient flooding, most of the existing protocols try to reduce the number of transmissions, which is decided without considering any online transmission result. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic and opportunistic flooding algorithm that controls rebroadcasts and retransmissions opportunistically. It seeks to achieve a target reliability required by an application. For this purpose, it makes a given node select only the subset of its one-hop neighbors to rebroadcast the same message. It considers node relations such as link error rates among nodes in selecting eligible neighbors to rebroadcast. The sender controls the number of retransmissions opportunistically by tracking the current status of message reception at its neighbors. Simulation is carried out to reveal that our proposed scheme achieves the given target reliability with less overhead than other flooding algorithms in most cases, thus prolonging the network lifetime.

  As delivering contents has become the dominant usage of the Internet, efficient content distribution is one of the hottest research areas in the network community. In future networks, it is anticipated that network entities such as routers will be equipped with in-network storage due to the trend of ever decreasing storage cost. In this article, we propose a novel content delivery architecture called ISP-centric content delivery (iCODE) by which an ISP can provide content delivery services as well. iCODE can provide efficient content delivery services since an ISP can cache contents in routers with storage modules considering traffic engineering and the locality of the content requests. Compared to CDN and P2P systems, iCODE can offer reduced delivery latency by placing the contents closer to end hosts, and incentives to ISPs by reducing inter-ISP traffic and allowing traffic engineering. We also discuss the technical and business issues to realize the iCODE architecture.

  The channel coherence time in indoor WLANs normally exceeds multiple frame transmission times. In light of this, we propose a new rate adaptation scheme, termed as the Rate Adaptation using Coherence Time (REACT), that has the following key features. First, without exchanging RTS and CTS frames, the receiver in REACT informs the transmitter of the improved channel condition via altering the ACK transmission rate, so that the transmitter increases the data rate for subsequent data frames. This enables the transmitter to adapt to the time-varying channel conditions while inducing the marginal overhead. Second, the transmitter in REACT can identify the reasons of frame losses by exploiting the feedback from the receiver and the estimated coherence time. Frame losses are assumed to be caused only by collisions for the duration of the coherence time after receiving an ACK frame with the altered bit rate. The coherence time is also used to enhance the adaptive RTS probing, so that the REACT can prevent the transmitter from decreasing its bit rate when collisions occur. Extensive simulations reveal that REACT consistently performs better than the other rate adaptation schemes (ARF, CARA, RRAA, and RBAR) in all the testing scenarios.

  Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an enabling technology for a variety of applications in next-generation network (NGN). Although several RFID management frameworks are proposed in the literature, they have limitations in terms of service extension. In this paper, we propose an extensible RFID management framework called SIP-based RFID management system (SRMS), which can support various RFID applications. SRMS employs session initiation protocol (SIP), which is an Internet standard protocol adopted in NGN for session management and mobility support. SRMS enhances the existing SIP architecture by introducing a surrogate user agent (SUA) and an SRMS name server (SNS). The SUA performs SIP signaling on behalf of RFID tags with limited capabilities, whereas the SNS provides name resolution services. To illustrate the extensibility of SRMS, we demonstrate two representative application scenarios. Compared with the existing RFID management frameworks, SRMS has advantages of service extensibility and reusability.

  In this paper, we propose and evaluate a distributed, energy-efficient, light-weight framework for target localization and tracking in wireless sensor networks. Since radio communication is the most energy-consuming operation, this framework aims to reduce the number of messages and the number of message collisions, while providing refined accuracy.
  The key element of the framework is a novel localization algorithm, called Ratiometric Vector Iteration (RVI). RVI is based on distance ratio estimates rather than absolute distance estimates which are often impossible to calculate. By iteratively updating the estimated location using the distance ratio, RVI localizes the target accurately with only three sensors’ participation.
  After localization, the location of the target is reported to the subscriber. If the target is stationary or moves around within a small area, it is wasteful to report (almost) same location estimates repeatedly. We, therefore, propose to dynamically adjust a reporting interval considering the target's movement so that we can reduce the report messages without loss of tracking quality. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed framework combining RVI and the movement-adaptive report scheduling algorithm reduces the localization error and total number of transmitted messages up to half of those of existing approaches.

  As the high speed Internet and the smart devices become prevalent, it is expected that the traffic volume of the video conferencing/broadcasting on the mobile devices is increasing explosively. One of the promising solutions for the traffic explosion problem is the content centric networking (CCN), which solves the problem by focusing on the content instead of the location. Even though CCN can provide better delivery efficiency, robustness, security, and native subscriber mobility, little attention is paid to the publisher mobility problem, where the mobile devices produce the real-time traffic. In this paper, we propose PMC, a publisher mobility support protocol in CCN. By introducing two names and corresponding operations at the routers, PMC supports publisher mobility for the mobile video conferencing and broadcasting without violating the original CCN architecture. We believe that PMC is a validated and secured scheme following the philosophy of the CCN architecture to support mobile publisher.

  In content-oriented networking, content files are typically cached in network nodes, and hence how to cache content files is crucial for the efficient content delivery and cache storage utilization. In this paper, we propose a content caching scheme, WAVE, in which the number of chunks to be cached is adjusted based on the popularity of the content. In WAVE, an upstream node recommends the number of chunks to be cached at its downstream node, which is exponentially increased as the request count increases. Simulation results reveal that the average hop count of content delivery of WAVE is lower than other schemes, and the inter-ISP traffic volume of WAVE is the second lowest (CDN is the lowest). Also, WAVE achieves higher cache hit ratio and fewer frequent cache replacements than other on-demand caching strategies.

  Since Internet routers are not aware of the contents being forwarded, the same content file is often delivered multiple times inefficiently. Similarly, users cannot exploit a nearby copy of the content of interest unless the content file is serviced by costly content delivery networks. Prior studies on the content-aware routing for efficient content delivery suffer from the scalability problem due to a large number of contents. We propose a scalable content routing, dubbed SCAN, which can exploit nearby and multiple content copies for the efficient delivery. SCAN exchanges the information of the cached contents using Bloom filter. Compared with IP routing, SCAN can offer reduced delivery latency, reduced traffic volume, and load balancing among links.

  Flooding, that is to deliver a packet from one node to all other nodes in the network, is an integral part of many wireless protocols. Flooding is often implemented by a series of broadcasts of each node and this causes some problems such as the broadcast storm and low reliability, by being engaged with the effects of radio signal propagation, e.g., multipath fading and interference. Many researchers have studied these problems over the years, however, most of these studies have been carried out assuming that all nodes in the network are equipped with a single radio interface and utilize only a single channel. This implies that most of the existing mechanisms that enhance the performance of flooding in wireless networks will not work in multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks (MR-MC WMNs). Motivated by this, in this paper, we propose a flooding mechanism that works well in MR-MC WMNs. Our flooding mechanism, which can operate with an arbitrary number of radio interfaces and channels, increases the reliability of flooding while alleviates the broadcast storm problem, using only local information. Through a detailed simulation study, we demonstrate that our flooding mechanism improves both the reliability and the efficiency of flooding in MR-MC WMNs.

  Accessing contents from mobile devices becomes more and more proliferated and hence the need for the content distribution in the pervasive environment is growing. However, distributing contents in such environments taxes wireless network operators substantially. To provide the content distribution service in a reasonable cost, we pay attention to user-deployable WiFi access points (APs). In this paper, we propose a decentralized and autonomous content overlay networking (DACON) architecture for the pervasive content distribution services, which is the overlay network architecture comprised of public WiFi APs. We identify and answer major challenges in realizing the content distribution service in the pervasive environment by exploiting the overlay network of public WiFi APs.

  WiFi-based location based services (LBSs) are expected to be more and more pervasive in future Internet. In WiFi networks, a virtual network database (VNDB), which maintains the estimated locations of access points (APs), should be constructed for the localization. Since the quality of the LBS is mainly determined by the location accuracy, it is essential to maintain accurate VNDBs for the LBS. In this paper, we propose two novel filtering methods to construct accurate VNDBs for the WiFi-based localization: RSS filtering and grid-based filtering. Experimental results on a real testbed show that the proposed methods construct a VNDB accurately and localization results with the accurate VNDB are comparable to those with a real network database (RNDB).

  The IEEE 802.15.5 standard for WPAN mesh adds mesh links to a tree structure for efficient communications for unicast routing. However, for multicasting, the basic tree routing scheme which does not exploit mesh links is adopted, which leads to inefficient multicasting. In this paper, we propose 'MTM (Multicast Tree with Mesh)' routing scheme which leverages mesh links for multicast routing. The proposed scheme shows better performance than the basic tree routing of IEEE 802.15.5 standard in terms of the number of participating nodes in multicast trees, control message overhead, and the number of data transmissions.

  While the current Internet architecture is designed based on the host-to-host communication paradigm, the real Internet usage shows that content-oriented traffic is dominant. In other words, users do care about not from whom they retrieve data but the data itself. A recent report analyzes that most of the Internet traffic is dominated by P2P traffic which does not conform to the hostto-host paradigm. Due to the inconsistency between the Internet design and the real usage, there is an unnecessary indirection overhead when users try to retrieve desired data. In consequence, it is needed to redesign the Future Internet based on the content-centric paradigm to provide data/contents to the users efficiently. In this paper, we define the concepts of content-oriented (networking) paradigm. Also, strengths and application scenarios of content-oriented networks (CONs) will be investigated.

  The IEEE 802.11 standards support multiple bit rates at the physical layer so that stations can maximize the system performance by controlling the transmission rate responding to the conditions of underlying time-varying channels. This paper proposes a novel scheme, termed as Rate Adaptation using Rate-adaptive Acknowledgment (RARA). The key idea of RARA is to regulate the ACK transmission rate as a means to dictate the sender to adjust the data transmission rate. Compared with previous works, the proposed scheme can react quickly to the prevailing conditions by the receiver-based decision while inducing marginal overhead. Simulation results show that the RARA consistently outperforms other rate adaption schemes.

  Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a new technology for object identification/tracking systems. In this paper, we propose a novel RFID location management system: SIP-based RFID management system (SRMS). SRMS employs session initiation protocol (SIP), which is an Internet standard protocol for session management and mobility support. SRMS enhances the existing SIP architecture by introducing a surrogate user agent (SUA) and an SRMS name server (SNS). The SUA performs location registration procedures on behalf of RFID tags with limited capabilities, while the SNS provides name resolution services for location registration/tracking of RFID tags. To evaluate the location registration latency in SRMS, we carry out performance analysis based on queueing models. Compared with the existing RFID management systems, SRMS has advantages of service extensibility and reusability.

  One of representative applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a data collecting system that monitors and gathers physical phenomena in an area of interest. To build an end-to-end data collecting system, how to efficiently integrate WSNs with the Internet should be investigated. In this paper, we first present important design considerations regarding interworking between these two networks and review the existing interworking approaches: gateway-based and overlay-based approaches. Then, we propose a new interworking architecture, extensible interworking architecture (EIA), which forms overlay sensor networks (OSNs) over Internet. EIA employs two advanced functions to improve the data gathering efficiency: application layer graph (ALG) and distributed caching. Compared with previous works, EIA can meet the design requirements on the WSN/Internet interworking more efficiently.

  One of popular applications in the Internet is the multimedia streaming services such as IPTV or YouTube in which supporting quality of service (QoS) is an important issue. One of widely adopted rate control scheme is TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) which shows comparable performance with TCP in term of throughput and lower variation of throughput over time. On the other hand, devices with multiple interfaces are emerging in the market. However, it has not proposed to exploit multiple interfaces simultaneously for multimedia streaming services with TFRC. In this paper, we propose a multimedia streaming algorithm with TFRC which exploits multiple interfaces to guarantee the quality of service. We show that the proposed scheme shows better performance than those with a single interface in terms of throughput and communication costs.

  최근 유비쿼터스 센서 네트워크(USN: Ubiquitous Sensor Network)를 구성하여 미래의 유비쿼터스 환경을 구축하려는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 유비쿼터스 센서 네트워크에서는 무선 센서 네트워크 상의 센싱 장치를 통해 주변의 상태 정보를 습득하고 이를 처리한 후 무선 인터페이스를 통해 다른 노드로 전달하게 된다. 이러한 무선 센서 네트워크의 가장 대표적인 응용 프로그램은 우리 주변에 산재한 물리적 현상을 감지하여 이를 수집, 모니터링하는 데이터 수집 응용 프로그램이다. 이러한 응용 프로그램의 경우 무선 센서 네트워크는 하나의 데이터 베이스로 간주할 수 있고 무선 센서 네트워크에 대한 질의는 일반적으로 인터넷에 연결된 호스트가 보내게 된다. 따라서 무선 센서 네트워크와 인터넷을 효과적으로 연동하는 기술은 유비쿼터스 센서 네트워크 구현을 위한 핵심 기술이다. 본 논문에서는 지금까지 제안된 다양한 무선 센서 네트워크와 인터넷의 연동 기법들에 대해서 살펴본다. 연동 기법은 크게 무선 센서 네트워크와 인터넷 사이에 위치하는 게이트웨이를 이용하여 두 네트워크 사이의 변환을 처리하는 게이트웨이 기법과 인터넷 또는 센서 네트워크 상에 별도의 오버레이 네트워크를 구성하여 연동하는 기법으로 나뉠 수 있다. 그리고 오버레이 기법은 무선 센서 네트워크 상에 IP 오버레이 네트워크를 구성하는 기법과 인터넷 호스트 상에 센서 네트워크의 프로토콜을 구현하여 오버레이 무선 센서 네트워크를 구성하는 기법으로 나뉠 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 각 기법의 특성을 기술하고 각 기법이 가지는 장점과 단점을 비교한다. 그리고 무선 센서 네트워크와 인터넷의 연동과 관련된 이슈와 추후 연구 주제 등에 대해서 정리한다.
